Managed Mobility Services

1.  Current Analysis Enterprise Users Starting to Leverage Managed Mobility Services

The use of service providers of Mobility Management is growing and will continue to grow.  IT managers see the complexity of mobile deployments increasing, and as BYOD makes MDM and security and other methods of containerizing and guaranteeing the security of corporate resources more crucial than ever.  With all of the confusion in the market regarding BYOD and its effect on application development and delivery, mobile device management, and mobile security, a logical option for enterprises would be to ‘outsource’ these functions to an IT service provider or mobile operator.  Companies often want to do a “do-it-yourself” option but it is increasingly difficult and not wise.  IT service providers have finally begun to offer standardized managed services (rather than only looking to very large companies to provide large outsourcing projects).  They may find that with this approach they can even go down-market further to address the needs of SMBs and mid-market companies, segments that they have largely ignored in the past.

2.  Continuum is partnering with entering  with mobile device management (MDM) specialist FiberLink. The arrangement will give Continuum the ability to enable its managed service providers with enterprise-class mobile endpoint management services.  Continuum is branding  the service as “Continuum MDM powered by FiberLink’s MaaS360.” This service, complements existing hosted remote monitoring and management, security and network assessment services, and will give Continuum managed service providers a new dimension in addressing the evolving, increasingly mobile and increasingly personal-owned endpoint landscape.  While solution providers are seeing rapidly increasing demand for MDM technology, they’re having a difficult time selecting and fielding MDM solutions. The diversity of products, the newness of the technology and the variable associated costs are slowing solution providers’ efforts to embrace MDM.  FiberLink is providing Continuum with MDM features, including provisioning and configuration management, mobile security and data protection, acceptable use and access policy management, compliance checking, self-service management portals and granular reporting. Essentially, Continuum with FiberLink will provide MSPs the ability for complete end-to-end mobile device lifecycle management.

3.  Defense Department Issues Huge  MDM RFP

The U.S. Department of Defense‘s (DOD) Defense Information Systems Agency earlier this month launched a mobile device management procurement that will task the winning contractor with supporting as many as 262,500 devices. The government plans to award a single contract that could span three years if all options are exercised.

* Small businesses will play a role on the winning contract. Contracts involving the massive scale DoD tend to go to large service providers. But bidders will be graded on the level of small business participation reflected in their proposals. Those proposals will be weighed according to “the complexity and variety of the work small firms are to perform and the extent of participation of such firms in terms of the value of the total acquisition,” the RFP stated.

* Proposals are due November 27 and the contract award is slated for April 2013.
